Matthew 6:33

First is a word about order, not about proportion. It does not say seek only the Kingdom, or seek it most of the time. It says seek it first — which assumes there is a second, and a third, and that they are legitimate.

That distinction rescues the verse from a misreading it often gets. Jesus has just spent several verses on food and clothing, and he does not say these are unimportant. He says your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. The needs are real and acknowledged. What is being corrected is sequence, not the presence of the needs on the list.

And there is a practical reason why sequence matters. Anything you seek first becomes the thing that decides the others. Put security first and it will quietly determine your work, your friendships, and what you are willing to say. It does not stay in its lane. Whatever goes first governs.

The promise attached is deliberately unglamorous: all these things will be given to you as well. Not abundance. The same list — food, drink, clothing — arriving by a different route. Jesus does not raise the target; he changes who is responsible for hitting it.

And righteousness is joined to the Kingdom by a single article in the Greek, so the two are one object. You cannot seek the reign and skip the character it produces.
