“My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”
Where this sits
Paul writes this to a church that had just sent him money while he was imprisoned — a congregation described elsewhere as giving out of deep poverty.
Reflection
This is a thank-you note, and knowing that changes it. The Philippians had given to Paul out of very little. Verse 19 is his response: you took care of my need, and my God will take care of yours. It is a promise made specifically to people who had already been generous, which is worth noting before it gets stretched into a guarantee of prosperity for everyone.
Two words carry the weight. “Need” is not “want” — Paul has just spent three verses explaining that he has learned to be content whether well fed or hungry, which means he does not think abundance and provision are the same thing. He is not promising the Philippians that they will never go without. He has himself gone without.
The second is “according to.” Not *out of* his riches — *according to* them. The distinction matters. A wealthy person who gives you a small sum has given *out of* their wealth; a wealthy person who gives *according to* their wealth gives on a scale that reflects it. Paul is saying the supply is proportional not to the size of your need but to the size of the resources behind it.
And the resources are located precisely: in glory, in Christ Jesus. Not in a bank, not in a benefactor, not in the volatility of your own year. Somewhere that does not fluctuate with your circumstances.
