“Thus says Yahweh, “Stand in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths, ‘Where is the good way?’ and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’”
Where this sits
Jeremiah is quoting God's appeal to a nation heading for exile. The last line of the verse is the nation's reply.
Reflection
Four instructions, and every one of them slows you down.
Stand in the ways. Stop moving. See. Look at where you actually are rather than where you assume you are. Ask for the old paths — consult someone who has been here before, which means admitting you are not the first. Then walk in it.
Only after all four does the promise come: you will find rest for your souls. It is not offered to the standing or the seeing or the asking. It is offered to the walking. The looking is necessary and it is not sufficient.
And then the verse does something almost no promise in Scripture does. It records the refusal. But they said, we will not walk in it.
That is a remarkable thing to leave in. The offer is genuine, the terms are reasonable, the rest is real — and the people say no. Not because they disputed it. There is no counter-argument in the text. They simply would not.
Which makes this verse useful in a way the tidier promises are not. It knows that being shown the good way and being willing to take it are two different events, and that the gap between them is where most of the trouble lives. Anyone who has known exactly what they should do for a year and not done it will recognise the second half of this verse better than the first.
