Ecclesiastes 3:11
“He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in their hearts, yet so that man can’t find out the work that God has done from the beginning even to the end.”

It follows the famous list of times — a time to be born, a time to die — in a book that keeps insisting how little of the picture anyone can see.
Reflection
Three claims sit in this verse, and the third undercuts any comfort you might have taken from the first two. That is characteristic of the book.
He has made everything beautiful in its time. Not everything is beautiful. In its time — which means there is a moment at which a thing fits, and outside that moment it does not. The list just before this makes the point: killing, weeping, tearing down. These are not beautiful things. They are given a season in which they are the right thing, and the beauty is in the fit rather than the item.
He has also set eternity in their hearts. Something in us will not be satisfied by anything on the timeline. It is why the successful are so often restless, and why the answer to the question what would be enough is never actually enough.
And then: yet so that man can't find out the work God has done from beginning to end. Both faculties are given, and the second exceeds the first. We can sense there is a whole. We cannot see it. That is not a temporary condition awaiting more information; the verse presents it as the design.
Which makes Ecclesiastes oddly steadying. It does not tell you that you will understand eventually. It tells you the longing you feel for the whole picture is real, correctly aimed, and not going to be satisfied from where you are standing.
