Proverbs 2:8

The subject of this verse is easy to lose in the middle of a long sentence, so it is worth naming. God is the one guarding, and what he guards is the paths of justice.

Not the just, in the first clause — the paths. That is an unusual object for protection. Roads are guarded so that people can use them; a guarded road is a road that stays open. What is being protected is the possibility of walking rightly, which is a different gift from being kept safe while you do.

That matters because the thing most often lost is not the person but the route. People do not usually abandon justice in a single decision. The road narrows, the options thin, the honest path seems to close — and after enough of that, a person who wanted to do right finds there is no visible way to. This verse promises that the way stays passable.

The second clause is more familiar: preserve the way of his saints. Same structure, and again the object is a way rather than a person.

And the whole thing hangs on the conditional several verses back — if you cry out for insight, if you search for it as for silver. The guarding is real and it is attached to a search. Proverbs does not offer it to people who have not gone looking.
