Reflection
This psalm is built for two voices. A leader recites the history — creation, the exodus, the wilderness, the kings defeated — and after every single line the congregation answers with the same phrase. Twenty-six times, without variation.
Read on the page it looks like padding. Sung as designed, it is something else entirely. The people are not being given new information each time; they are being trained. The history changes, the response does not, and that is the argument the psalm is making by its structure rather than its content.
Because the history it recites is not uniformly gentle. It includes plagues, a drowned army, and kings struck down by name. The same response follows those verses as follows the ones about bread. Whatever the congregation is being taught, it is not that every episode is comfortable.
The phrase itself is Hebrew's covenant word again — loyal love, faithfulness to an agreement, the disposition of someone who stays. Endures forever adds duration to it, and duration is what the whole psalm is demonstrating by repetition. The point is made by saying it more times than seems necessary.
Which is a fair description of how anyone actually comes to believe something. Not by hearing it once, well argued, but by saying it after every line of a long history until it is what you say without deciding to.
