The closing line of a psalm about Zion, sung after walking around the city and counting its towers.
Reflection
The psalm before this line is a tour. The people are told to walk about Zion, go around her, count the towers, mark the bulwarks, so that they can tell the next generation. It is an inventory of something solid.
And then the last verse steps away from the architecture entirely. For this God is our God forever and ever. The towers were worth counting, but they were never the point; the psalm ends by naming what the city was evidence of.
That matters because those towers came down. Within a few centuries the walls the psalmist counted were rubble and the temple was ash. Anyone reading this psalm after 586 BC would have known that, and the last verse is the only line in it that survived the event intact.
He will be our guide even to death. The phrase is disputed — the Hebrew is difficult, and some read it as guide us forever, others as guide us beyond death. What is not disputed is the horizon. The guidance is being extended to the last place a guide is any use, and the psalm ends there rather than at the city gate.
Which is a strange conclusion for a song about fortifications, and it is why the song outlasted them.
