Proverbs 23:18

This is the answer to a question the previous verse raises, and the question is envy.

Don't let your heart envy sinners. That is the instruction, and anyone who has watched dishonest people do well knows why it needed saying. The corrosion is not usually dramatic. It is the slow arithmetic of noticing that the corners you refused to cut cost you something, and the people who cut them are fine.

The answer given is not that the observation is wrong. Proverbs does not tell you that you have misread the situation. It tells you that you have stopped reading too early. Surely there is a future — literally, an after. Whatever ledger you are looking at is not the final one.

And the second clause is the sharper of the two: your hope will not be cut off. Cut off is a violent phrase, and it is chosen because that is exactly what envy does. Envy does not usually destroy your circumstances. It severs your expectation — you keep the life and lose the point of it.

So the promise here is oddly specific. It does not say your situation will improve. It says the thing you are hoping toward will still be there when you arrive. Which is the only assurance that actually treats envy, because envy is not a shortage of goods. It is a doubt about whether waiting was worth it.
